Windows RT was doomed right from the start, and devices with the OS had no chance to compete with the more established Apple iPad and Android tablets, Gold said.

A price drop may be an attempt to stimulate demand, said David Daoud, research director at IDC.

"A lot of it is pre-positioning for the summer season," Daoud said. "Do price reductions stimulate demand? Sure they, do, in the right time."

A price drop could help clear out inventory ahead of the back-to-school season, when new devices typically ship, Daoud said. Companies also want to get rid of excess inventory as it can be costly to hold products for long.

The analysts acknowledged that Microsoft did little to spread awareness about Windows RT. People could not understand the purpose of the OS as it was incompatible with existing Windows applications, and it wasn't a complete operating system like Windows 8.

"RT will fade away over time," Gold said. "It's not a full Windows 8 experience. That said, why wouldn't I spend more and get a full Pro version of the device?"

"With the product lifecycle being as short as they are, competitively all manufacturers have to assume that lifecycles will tu fairly quickly. As a result you get to a point where as the owner of a device, you're three generations behind but your battery works fine and you are questioning whether you should buy the new device," he said.

Consumers aren't pretty motivated to upgrade with every release, but if you get three or more generations behind, you might upgrade just because of the advancements there.

"It's not about the battery it's about the features of the machine. Look at the cell phone market. The life span of a cell phone is 18 months. They certainly last longer, but people roll them over because people want the latest and greatest and I think that dynamic is part of the market," added Baker.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is rethinking on the former minister Kapil Sibal's much-hyped proposal to provide low-cost access-cum-computing device Aakash to students.

"On the basis of the report, we will take further action on whether to proceed with the Cabinet note (or not)," Thakur said.

The 7" touch screen tablet was promised to be made available to students at a subsidised rate of Rs 1130.

The HRD Minister MM Pallam Raju said, "Aakash was a very good initiative. It generated lot of interest. But today technology and devices are changing every day. Many suppliers have come to the market."

The Ministry will continue to work on the product as long as development of the product is conceed, he said adding that IIT-Bombay is now working on development of Aakash-III, a new version with much advanced features.

"The ultimate aim should be to enable a student to access content at an affordable price through enabling environment and exploiting the 'National Mission on Education using ICT' platform," he said, maintaining that introduction of Aakash in market had brought down the cost of tablet PCs(ONDA V972)

The minister, however, expressed conce over slow production of Aakash-II by Datawind, describing it as a "big challenge".

"That is where the failure has come," he said, adding that his Ministry has written to IIT-Bombay to take action if Datawind fails to supply the devices by March 31 this year.
